2005 State of the Blog

December 04, 2005

It's been about 18 months since I started this blog so I thought it was time to post some stats.  Here is this year's page-load activity:

I took off January (started collecting stats that month) and December (month not over yet) since I only have partial data.  There's a general trend upwards on page-load activity as time passes, but I wanted to see if # posts per month had anything to do with it, so I used Excel to make this bubble chart:

Some observations to note:

  • May and Aug-September had a noticeable drop-off in page-loads
  • After the drop-off, I posted more often as the big bubble in June/July and September shows
  • Most of the hits I get are through the Java on PocketPC FAQ and google/yahoo searches on various post topics
  • The recency of the post is not as important as the popularity (duh!), as several older well-searched posts generate the lionshare of hits

Where are these folks coming from?

That chart is based on the last 100 page loads as of this instant only, but it still gives some idea of the representation of different countries visiting this site.  The bar graph is a little cutoff in the above graphic, but it should show US (21 hits), Germany (12), and UK (11).  Usually, the US, UK, Germany and Australia are well represented.  I get fewer hits from India which is surprising given the sheer number of english speaking (this blog is written in English) technologists there.

More than 90% of the search engine hits are Google, with Yahoo a distant second.  MSIE and Firefox are the dominant browsers, with MSIE on top.

Overall, I consider this a technology (mostly Java) blog from a regular guy -- I don't run a company, author books, speak at conferences, or have an agenda to sell something.  In that sense I'm happy and gratefull that I got close to 9000 hits in November.
